Breda Burns
Breda Burns is a multidisciplinary artist. The underlying themes she explores are identity and resilience, the duality of strength and vulnerability, of fragmentation and consolidation, of fracture and repair. Taking that which is already there splintered and broken to remake, remould, building and transforming.
The introduction of audio, based on interviews with artists and activists, has been the glue that has brought together her practice to date. Alongside audio installations, text and image fragments appear on reflective and industrial surfaces, distorted and refracted to mirror the layered nature of perception itself. The result is a dialogue between clarity and confusion, stillness and overstimulation, asking viewers to reconsider what it means to focus, to drift, to feel.
Her current practice explores neurodiversity and creativity. Interviews with fellow creatives was the cornerstone of 'The Space Between Real and Shadow' presented in the Custom House Studio and Gallery on the occasion of Westival's 50th anniversary. She represented CHS+G's with 'Neurovoices' at Supermarket Independent Art fair Stockholm Sweeden.
Breda exhibits widely in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and residencies. Her work is held in public and private collections. Memberships include Interface Inagh Valley, Visual Artists Ireland. Wright Artists, WestInk Society of Printers and she is a Fellow of The Ballenglen Foundation. She has been supported by Arts Council of Ireland, Mayo Co Council, Creative Ireland and Culture Ireland.
